Don Bachardy (b. 1934) Born in Los Angeles, California, Don Bachardy studied art at both Chouinard Art Institute in LA and the Slade School of Art in London. Since then, he has been known for his abstract expressionist watercolor and acrylic portraiture, with pieces permanently residing in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the University of Texas, Princeton University, the Smithsonian Institute, among much more. With the use of paint, Bachardy completes his portraits within the time frame of his subject sitting in front of him, who range from ordinary individuals to Hollywood celebrities, as well as to other artists. As stated by Bachardy, “Something deep comes out, something very different and shocking,” referring to the painting process, which is made through both his loose brushwork and keen observations. Self Portrait, January 11, 2019, Acrylic on paper, 29 x 23 in. One of his more recent pieces, Bachardy exhibits a clear understanding of how to express emotion in paint, especially through his geometric contour as well as his notable brushstrokes. By creating what looks to be a thick layer of paint through every stroke of his brush, the piece gains a subtle simpleness and looseness that makes it all the more intricate and complex. I stumbled upon this artist in my search and curiosity for simplistic painters, and although his work demonstrates a clear level of expertise, the overall feel of it caught my eye. By dedicating such close detail to the face of the portrait, yet simplifying the rest of the painting, Bachardy succeeds in creating a piece that is both realistic to the last drop, while also carrying a tinge of abstract expressionism. In doing so, his particular style stuck out to me among the other artists I viewed. |
